All About Sunscreen

HELLO!

I have been meaning to get this post out for quite a while now, since we have reached the summer months and more and more of you lucky people are going for your beach vacations (explains the above picture hahaha).

The reason why I want to talk about sun protection is because it is so neglected by many. I have to admit, I only started applying sun protection daily when I started Uni. Even so, I did not know what the numbers on the bottle meant, and what I should be looking out for. I just went straight for the highest protection. It is important to know what you are purchasing, so that you can get the product that best suits your needs.

Firstly, we need to know what we are protecting ourselves against and then we can learn how to protect ourselves against it.

Before I start, since my personal experience and priorities has always been geared towards achieving a fairer skintone, most of my information would be about what causes skin darkening and how to prevent it.

The main cause of skin darkening / tanning is because of Melanin. Melanin protects the body by absorbing solar radiation/ sun rays.

Excessive exposure to the sun causes damage to the skin and the body naturally combats and seeks to repair the damage and protect the skin by creating and releasing further melanin into the skin's cells. With the production of the melanin, the skin color darkens.

There are 2 main types of UV rays emitted by the sun that affects us. UVA rays and UVB rays (both of them causes skin darkening). The exposure to both types of rays increases the chances of skin cancer!

UV A

·         This is the longer ray, which means that it penetrates into our skin, and causes all sorts of invisible damage to our skin.
·         It causes premature aging, sun spots, pigmentation, wrinkles and uneven skintone.
·         It causes skin darkening because UV A radiation causes oxidative stress which results in the oxidization of existing melanin and hence leads to darkening of the melanin.

Still following? I know scientific terms are quite a pain, so I have came up with the simpler version
Skin Darkening by UV A rays
SUN  --> UV A rays --> Body reacts to UV A rays --> Existing melanin oxidised --> Darkening of melanin --> Tanner skin

UV A PROTECTION
The PA factor on sunscreen, is what protects us from UV A rays.
I am using the PA system because this most Asian brands, in fact most popular brands use this as the indication for UV A protection.
There is PA +, PA ++ and PA +++ . The more pluses, the more protection.
This is why we always see higher PA protection for facial sunscreen because our faces need more protection.
Although UVA rays are less intense that UVB rays, because they are longer waves they will penetrate through the clouds and glass. SO this means that we still have to put on sunscreen on a cloudy day and on days were we are staying indoors.

Make sure to look out for the PAs~
Personally I do not think that it is a must to use SPF 50 all the time, as long as it is PA +++ I know that I am protected from the rays that will cause damage^^

UV B
·         This is the shorter ray, that causes sun burn.
·         It also contributes to skin darkening as it causes an increase in production of melanin in the skin.

UVB  PROTECTION
The Sun Protection Factor, or the SPF factor is what protects us from UVB rays.
It is important that we know what the number means to know how much protection we are getting!
Sun Protection = length of time you can stay out in the sun without burning  x  SPF number
But honestly, no one know/ calculates how long they can stay out in the sun before they start burning. So, lets take 10 mins as a guideline.
For example:
A sunscreen with SPF 15, will allow me to stay out in the sun for 15 times longer.
So that translates to about 10 x 15 = 150 mins of protection.

For maximum protection, go for SPF 50 PA +++

General Tips on Sunscreen
1)      The full effect of sun protection can only be felt when sunscreen is applied adequately and evenly on the skin. This is rarely the case, so we should assume a 70% protection.

2)      If you are outdoors, swimming or exposed under the sun for long periods of time, it is very important to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. This will prevent you from burning, but it is highly unlikely that you can escape getting tanned.

Proof that I do go outdoors and have a penchant for outdoor activities!

Okay but honestly, I did reapply sunscreen ALL THE TIME. Thankfully when I was at Phuket last year, it was very cloudy so yay for me!

3)      For those that apply skincare with spf factor in it, do note that there is no ‘additional results’
eg:  Applying a moisturiser with SPF 15 + Applying sunscreen with SPF 50 ≠ SPF 65

The protection comes from the product with the highest SPF factor. So it is more important to apply sunscreen at the end of your skincare routine ( before applying makeup) !

I will try to consolidate a list of my favourite sunscreens and do a post on it! Promise!

Thats all for now! Till next time then XXX

Lancome Mat Miracle Review 24H Liquid Foundation

This is it guys. I think I have found my Holy Grail, Love of all time, Favourite foundation ever.

I don't think I can use anything without thinking and comparing it to this.

It is that amazing.

I am in Love

This foundation is non- comedogenic, long wearing, satin luminous finish foundation. It is also sebum resistant and has shine control properties

I was so excited when I came across this foundation on some Taiwanese blogs. They released this about a month earlier in Taiwan. The reason for my excitement is becuase I loved the Teint Miracle. It was my go to foundation when I needed to create natural looking perfect skin.

However, since the Teint Miracle is meant to give us a 'glow from within' look, it does not last me a very long time before it starts looking a tad oily. Nothing I cannot handle but I would prefer something that is more suitable for oiler skin especially in the hotter months.

I got this at Incheon Airport at 54 000 KRW. I got this at the very last minute because I was running so late. They are not sold at the Changi Airport Duty Free stores yet thou.

My shade is BO-01, which is the same shade I am for the Teint Miracle. Another reason why I love Lancome foundations is because they are designed for asian skin.

The Teint Miracle was the first foundation that I used and gotten so many compliments about how good and bright my skin looked. I credit this to the colour selection of the foundation and of course the aura technology that went into making the foundation.

Colour selection is so important. For the Lancome foundation, the BO ( Beige Ochre ) works amazingly well at correcting the yellow undertones in my skin. Hence making it look brighter and fairer.

It's consistency is very light and it is very emolient so it spreads very well.

With a foundation that spreads well, it means that we need less product and also much less effort to blend it into to our skin^^

The coverage is amazing. I am not the type that likes to load up on my foundation so I normally only use about 1/2 - 1 pump of product. I like to use my fingers or use a buffing brush.

I first tried it when my skin was going through quite a bad stage. I had quite a few bumps from the monthly hormones and my skin was looking rather dull. It made my skin look so good!

Not only does it cover most of the scars, the pore coverage is one of the best.

I am not sure how this is showing up, but my cheek area for the 'before' part looks significantly rougher and less refined.

After                       Before

This is one of the rare products that makes such a huge difference in my pore size. It also brightens up my skin very well ^^

It definitely does not last 24 Hrs, but is very long lasting. This picture was taken 14 hours after applying on the foundation. My skin still looks relatively decent. Granted I did blot and powder throughout the day. But it is able to last me for a good 3-4 hours.

As for the humidity and heat test. I would say it passed with flying colours. I wore this for a day trip to JB, and as luck would have it, the air conditioner broke down. So I was stuck in a terrible traffic without A/C in the terrible heat. AND MY SKIN STILL LOOKED FRESH. I did not even blot throughout the day.

I do not know what kind of socery is this. I even went clubbing right after I got back from Malaysia. I just added a tad of powder to freshen up my skin.

This is how my skin looks after using 1 pump of the Mat Miracle Foundation, blended with my fingers,

I love how it:

- Controls shine without looking too matte or cakey

- Very light in consistency

- Provides very good coverage

-Provides amazing pore coverage

- Long Lasting

- Does not clog pores or cause breakouts

- Has a very natural finish

- Has a wide range of colours to suit asian skin

- Designed to suit humid environments

Cons:

- Stick to dry patches - This is due to the mattifying ingredients. So if you have dry patches, be sure to exfoliate and moisturise well!

-Pricey- It is about 66 SGD in Singapore, but you can get them for cheaper during departmental store sales. So be sure to keep a look out for that.

After this super long post, I think yall can see how much I am in love with this foundation. I would really recommend this to those with normal/combination oily skin. It works so well for our climate.

I feel quite guilty when people compliment me on my skin. I really want to tell them "IT IS THE FOUNDATION!!!' haha so do try this out!!!!

Sorry I have not been too active recently, but I have been exhausted from internship. Not that there is a whole lot to do, its just the waking up early part that is making me tired and sleepyyyyy.

Anyhos, here is my etude house haul for the summer! My etude house shopping list was the longest, and of course I got a whole lot of stuff! So lets go!

I did get quite abit of discount because I had accumulated quite a lot of points in my membership card^^

Precious Mineral BB Compact Bright Fit SPF 30/PA++
(#1 Ivory Beige)
15 000 KRW

I did not intend to get another powder because I can never use them up. But I had to get this because my friend who only used high end makeup before her trip to Korea LOVED THIS.

She has tried countless of powders all high end ones. But nothing seemed to work on her face. The powder did not 'stick'. Yknow there are some products that just look very cakey and does not settle well on your face no matter what you do? That was what happened to her.

So she got this on a whim and IT WORKED SO WELL! I could see significant improvement to how her skin looked after using this powder. All of us ended up getting one hehe.
